SUMMARY:Lessons Learned: COVID-19’s Impact on Students
DESCRIPTION:With a special focus on how the pandemic has impacted learning for students and the mental and physical effects of distance learning, we will hear from Dr. Steven Adelsheim, Clinical Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and ​​​Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools. They will share insights on what schools should consider when supporting students’ mental and physical wellbeing as most students return to the physical campus in the fall and how education might adapt post COVID-19 to dramatic educational shifts.\nThe Silicon Valley Leadership Group is especially excited about this roundtable because it is a combination of our Health and Education Committees taking place during our COVID-19 and Education Roundtable series.\nWe hope to see you there!\nSteven Adelsheim, MD is a child/adolescent and adult psychiatrist who works to support community behavioral health partnerships locally, regionally, at the state level and nationally. He is the Director of the Stanford Center for Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Adelsheim has partnered in developing statewide mental health policy and systems, including those focused on school mental health, telebehavioral health, tribal behavioral health programs, and suicide prevention. For many years Dr. Adelsheim has been developing and implementing early detection/intervention programs for young people in school-based and primary care settings, including programs for depression, anxiety, prodromal symptoms of psychosis, and first episodes of psychosis. Dr. Adelsheim is also involved in the implementation of integrated behavioral health care models in primary care settings as well as the use of media to decrease stigma surrounding mental health issues. He is currently leading the US effort to implement the headspace model of mental health early intervention for young people ages 12-25 based in Australia. Dr. Adelsheim also leads the national clinical network for early psychosis programs called PEPPNET.\n​​​Dr. Mary Ann Dewan, the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, has served in education for over 33 years. Her distinguished work in education reform and change leadership is grounded in her commitment to serve the community and underserved, vulnerable youth and a mission that is centered around diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. A strong advocate for the expansion of early learning services, health, and education, Dr. Dewan believes in providing each and every child opportunities that promote high quality, equitable, and inclusive experiences. She has served in a variety of leadership roles, which have led to several local and state recognitions, including the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Commendation in 2019, the California Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (CASCD) Outstanding Instructional Leader Award, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President’s Medal for Exemplary Service During the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, and the 2021 Region 8 ACSA Superintendent of the Year Award.
