SUMMARY:Local Government Day with Sunnyvale City Councilmember Omar Din
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Wednesday, June 16th at 10:00am, for a Local Government Day roundtable addressing issues of importance in the City of Sunnyvale with the City’s newest Councilmember, Omar Din.\nCouncilmember Din will provide an update on issues in the City of Sunnyvale and share more about his motivation for running for office and what he hopes to accomplish in his first term. Members will also get the opportunity to engage with Councilmember Din in a dedicated Q+A session.\nWe hope to see you there!\nOmar Din – City Councilmember at City of Sunnyvale\nSunnyvale has shaped the person I am today. My parents immigrated from Pakistan in 1983. My father’s first job was working the night shift at a motel in San Jose, while studying for his dental board exam during the day. After this my family settled in Sunnyvale where my father currently serves the community and has his own dental practice while my mother runs her own business, a daycare. Throughout my childhood my parents not only reinforced the value of hard work, given they both were small business owners, but also the necessity of civic engagement. I spent my weekends volunteering at community centers and local nonprofits, and it was in these experiences that I built a deep relationship with my city.\nMy first exposure to politics was going with my siblings to protest the Iraq War. Throughout my upbringing my family would never shy away from politics and the belief that the most patriotic thing a person could do was fight to make government better. This ethos stayed with me as I went to De Anza Community College where I managed a student budget of $1.2 million. It was also then that I was appointed one of the youngest commissioners in Sunnyvale city history to the Parks and Recreations Commission. I completed my degree in public policy at Cornell University. I intend to use the knowledge I gained from those experiences, and from working for Assemblymember Evan Low and Congressmember Mike Honda, for the City of Sunnyvale.\nREGISTERFor questions or to sign up to attend this event, please contact roundtables@svlg.org ( mailto:roundtables@svlg.org ). \nSPONSORS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to sponsor this event or series, please contact roundtables@svlg.org ( mailto:roundtables@svlg.org ). \nNOTICERoundtables and town halls are exclusive events for SVLG members.\nPLEASE BE AWARE THAT BY ATTENDING THIS EVENT, YOU CONSENT TO YOUR VOICE, NAME, AND/OR LIKENESS BEING USED, WITHOUT COMPENSATION, IN ANY AND ALL MEDIA, WHETHER NOW KNOWN OR HEREAFTER DEVISED, IN PERPETUITY.
